In a world filled with big companies mostly interested with increasing profit, sacrificing product quality and integrity is a reality. Harmful chemicals are often added into everyday household and personal products to lower production costs. Disregard to public health is committed all in the name of money. As a result, products that cause health problems make it to almost every home in the United States of America.
This is why it is very important for people to be mindful against these health hazards. The first step is to be aware.
Below is a list of the most common everyday items you did not know were toxic, and safe and natural alternatives.
1. Talcum Powder
In 2017, a major baby powder brand paid over 700 million dollars. This was about a lawsuit linking talcum powder to ovarian cancer. Lung damage from the use of this beauty product is also documented. Do away from this horrible health hazard, and use cornstarch-based powder instead.
2. Bleach
Using bleach might be easy and effective but it comes at a health cost. Respiratory problems and eye irritation could be caused by the toxic fumes that bleach produces. A natural and effective alternative would be to use lemon essential oil and distilled white vinegar.
3. Scented Candles and Air Fresheners
Although made to clean the air; these also spread harmful substances. People that are most vulnerable like children and the elderly can experience migraine, allergic reactions and even cancer. To keep your house smelling nice, you can use air-cleaning plants, beeswax candles and essential oils instead.
4. Antibacterial Chemicals
It is important to check the label of sanitation products for the chemical Triclosan. This is especially important for products that are applied directly to the body like soap and toothpaste. Triclosan causes microbial imbalance, muscle weakness and even thyroid and gut problems. Use regular cleaning products instead.
5. Non-stick cookware
Thyroid diseases, hypertension, kidney cancer, and infertility are linked to non-stick chemicals found in this famous cookware. Perfluorooctanoic acid, found in non-stick cookware, has been phased out in 2015 due to high risks of being a carcinogen for people. It is best to use untreated stainless steel and cast-iron cookware. Avocado oil, lard or any cooking oil may be used when preparing food.
6. Antiperspirant
Most antiperspirants contain aluminum. This is the ingredient that prevents odor and reduces sweating. The problem is that, in the recent years, there have been concerns about its connection to breast cancer. Studies have not yet clarified if this is true but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires a warning be put on the label. It is best to look for products without aluminum.
Being conscious of your choice of products is a great way to take care of yourself and your family. Taking the time to be aware and meticulous of the items in your own home is a simple but totally necessary step towards healthy living.
